Your Shower Routine, Reconsidered

Showers are ritualistic. From adjusting the temperature to your liking, feeling the steam rising, and the warmth enveloping you like a deep hug. It’s one of the few moments of brief solitude that belongs entirely to you. Yet, while we overhaul our beauty routines, scrutinize our cleaning products, and become fluent in the language of health and wellness, the water in our shower and the products used are left largely unexamined.

And, it’s about time that changed. Whether it be ten minutes or an hour, that shower ritual can have greater consequences than most people realize. Hot water opens your pores allowing the cleansing action of steam, but it can also create a direct path for foreign compounds to enter your body. From shampoo, body wash, conditioner, and the loofahs used to apply these cleansers, instead of  simply washing away with the flow of water, small amounts can enter your bloodstream and gastrointestinal tract through air and skin. We’re taking a deeper look at the products and tools involved in your shower to help set you on a cleaner, healthier shower ritual.

Two categories of chemicals we’re flagging are: phthalates, the plasticizing compounds hiding inside synthetic fragrance, and PFAS, known as "forever chemicals". Both are endocrine disruptors - causing systemic impacts to your health, skin, and reproductive organs. And while highly pervasive, these chemicals are largely avoidable once you know the ingredients, packages, and tools to steer clear of them.

Following is a complete guide to understanding the invisible exposure problem in your shower, and the fragrance-free, clean swaps that transform it from a source of daily chemical accumulation into the true sanctuary it is meant to be, all shoppable here.

Products recommended and reviewed by The Fragrance Free are products we use, love, or have heavily researched. If you click an affiliate link and make a purchase, we may receive a small commission (at no extra cost to you) that we will use to explore more amazing fragrance-free products

The Invisible Exposure Problem: What Is Actually Happening in Your Shower

The skin provides a barrier or a protective coating (layer), and by design and function typically keeps the outside world out. That is true, for the most part, but skin has permeable attributes, and under the right conditions, and it can absorb what it contacts with remarkable efficiency.

Just think about some hormone or pain medications that are applied with a patch. These types of medicines can transfer from the skin into the bloodstream, and certain shower products and even creams can operate in the same mechanism.

During a shower, heat is the important factor. Hot water dilates blood vessels near the skin's surface, opens the follicular channels, and provides certain-sized ingredients with a pathway into systemic circulation. While absorption rates vary by product, a warm shower is the conduit and by washing, you are transdermally absorbing some of the components of these products into your body.

Steam is also a powerful aerosolizer of fragrance. The average shower produces enough water vapor to take a liquid- or gel-like shampoo, encapsulate the molecules, and create microscopic air bubbles. As you inhale the steam, mixed in are the encapsulated scent molecules created from those products, entering your lungs and in those precious moments. And, your bathroom becomes one of the greatest points of chemical contact in your day, if your products are filled with fragrances and plastic ingredients. We’re here to turn your exposure point into one of a sacred healing ritual.

Phthalates: The Plastic Hiding in Your Shampoo

Phthalates are a family of synthetic chemicals originally developed as plasticizers, or compounds used to make plastics more flexible and durable. Over time, they migrated into a wide range of consumer products, including personal care. In beauty, phthalates serve as solvents and fixatives that help synthetic fragrance compounds adhere to skin and last longer.

Here is where it gets tricky. You will almost never see "phthalates" on an ingredient label. Instead, you will see the word fragrance  or its European equivalent, parfum. Under U.S. law, fragrance is considered a trade secret, which means manufacturers are not required to disclose the individual compounds that constitute it. A single ingredient listing of "fragrance" can represent a proprietary blend of dozens,  sometimes hundreds,  of synthetic chemicals, phthalates frequently among them. Read more here on our blog post, The Perils with Fragrance in Beauty and Home Products, where we discuss in depth the regulatory nuances of fragrances, how these chemicals end up in personal care goods, even in those labeled fragrance-free.

The concern with phthalates is not cosmetic. They are classified as endocrine disruptors, meaning they can interfere with the body's hormonal signaling systems. Research has associated phthalate exposure with disruptions to reproductive hormones, thyroid function, and metabolic regulation. Because they are lipophilic and attracted to fat,  they cross skin readily and accumulate in fatty tissue. They do not simply wash off, and are associated with weight gain, skin conditions, and more serious reproductive and carcinogenic issues.

Fragrance-free products eliminate this risk by design. Without synthetic fragrance chemicals in the formula, there is no vehicle for phthalate delivery. This is meaningful when you consider the products to use in your shower.

What to look for on the label

Flag these on any product label: "fragrance", "parfum", "FD&C dyes", "diethyl phthalate" or "DEP", "dibutyl phthalate" or "DBP", "dimethyl phthalate" or "DMP". When in doubt: if it smells strongly and the ingredient list says fragrance, plastic phthalates are likely present.

PFAS in Your Shower: It Is Not Just the Products

PFAS, or per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances,  are a class of over 12,000 synthetic chemicals developed in the mid-twentieth century for their extraordinary resistance to water, oil, and heat. They are found in nonstick cookware, food packaging, firefighting foam, stain-resistant textiles, and, increasingly documented, personal care products. They are called "forever chemicals" for a precise reason: their carbon-fluorine bonds are among the strongest in organic chemistry, which means they do not break down in the environment or in the human body.

In the context of your shower, PFAS enters from two distinct directions.

First: your water supply. PFAS contamination of municipal water systems is far more widespread than most people realize. Studies and EPA assessments have identified PFAS in tap water across hundreds of communities in the United States, with concentrations varying significantly by geography and proximity to industrial sources. When you shower in unfiltered tap water, you are potentially exposing your skin and respiratory system to PFAS with every session, especially if you like to take in a few gulps along the way. The Environmental Working Group maintains a public tap water database (ewg.org/tapwater) where you can search your zip code for local contamination data. It is a worthwhile five minutes to learn about your environment.

Second: certain product formulations. Water-resistant, long-lasting, and "smoothing" personal care formulas found in some hair serums, conditioners, and waterproof cosmetics - have been found to contain PFAS compounds used for their film-forming and texture-enhancing properties. These are less commonly disclosed, and third-party testing by organizations like the Environmental Working Group has identified PFAS in products that do not acknowledge their presence on the label.

Third: the product packaging. Product packaging for consumables, such as food, has much more stringent restrictions and clearer demarcations when BPA is or isn’t used. But what about the packaging for your shower products. The plastics that are in the packaging or line the insides of the containers can leach into the ingredients, changing the composition and increasing exposure. Plus, plastic and heat are an interesting combination, and as the mercury rises so does the breakdown of the plastic containers.

The shower compounds all of these exposures. Once the hot water opens your pores and steam is inhaled, even minimal shower durations of  ten or fifteen minutes can have meaningful dermal uptake of these toxins. Filtering your shower water with heads, whole home water systems, and curating your products are not separate concerns. They are two parts towards achieving a safe and healthy showering ritual.

Body Wash: Clean from the First Lather

  1. Seen Skin-Caring Body Wash

Why we love it: Seen Skin-Caring Body Wash is a multitasker that cleans while delivering a targeted blend of hard-working active ingredients:  bisabolol for anti-inflammatory soothing, tocopherol (vitamin E) for antioxidant protection, and glycerin for humectant hydration,  that work together to support the skin barrier. The formula relies on Sodium Lauroyl Methyl Isethionate, one of the gentler sulfate-free cleansing agents available, making it non-irritating and without pore-clogging oils or masking fragrance.

Founded on the principle that what you put on your skin can transfer to your whole body, all of their products are formulated with non-comedogenic  non-irritating standards in mind.

Texture & feel:  The wash is a smooth, thick gel that builds into a foam, lathers well, and rinses clean without that stripped, squeaky feeling. It's lightweight on the skin and leaves no residue, just a clean, refreshing feeling. Ideal for all skin types, including sensitive, acne-prone, and eczema-prone skin, and gentle enough for daily use year-round.

What it promises: A dermatologist-developed, non-comedogenic, non-irritating body wash that prioritizes cleansing without disrupting the skin barrier. Clinically, it has been shown to be safe for sensitive skin and effective at reducing breakouts.

  1. Vanicream Body Wash

Why we love it: Vanicream has been a dermatologist-recommended staple for years, and the Gentle Body Wash is one of the cleanest and simplest formulas in the entire category. With no botanical extracts, no masking fragrance, no dyes, no lanolin, no parabens, no formaldehyde releasers,  it’s free of the most common chemical irritants found in everyday body wash.

The surfactant system relies on coco-glucoside and sodium cocoyl glycinate, both among the mildest cleansers available. Panthenol (pro-vitamin B5) provides light conditioning and anti-inflammatory support, and glycerin keeps the skin barrier hydrated without adding unnecessary complexity. If your skin is reactive, compromised, or managing a condition like eczema, psoriasis, or perioral dermatitis, this is your anchor product. It is also excellent for children, anyone post-procedure, or as the baseline wash in a carefully curated routine.

Texture & feel: Thin and gel in texture, this product lathers gently with a soft foam, rinses completely, and leaves skin feeling soft and clean. The finish is neutral and uncomplicated. Suitable for the whole family, all skin types, all year round.

What it promises: A gentle, sulfate-free, soap-free cleanser that removes dirt and oils without drying or irritating the skin.

Stamp of approval: National Eczema Association Seal of Acceptance; dermatologist-tested; free of dyes, fragrance, masking fragrance, lanolin, parabens, and formaldehyde releasers; sulfate-free, betaine-free, and gluten-free, the #1 dermatologist-recommended brand for sensitive skin

  1. Attitude Body Wash

Why we love it: Attitude is the brand we turn to when we want fragrance-free, clean, and eco conscious. The formula is comprised of  98%+ naturally derived ingredients: plant-based surfactants (coco-glucoside, sodium cocoyl isethionate, lauryl glucoside), glycerin for humectant hydration, grape seed oil for essential fatty acids, and avena sativa (colloidal oat) extract to soothe reactive, dry skin.

The bottle is HDPE #2 recyclable, one of the easiest plastics to recycle. Every aspect of this product is carefully evaluated. From a price standpoint, it’s on the lower end, and highly accessible for anyone transitioning to a cleaner routine without wanting to invest a significant amount upfront.

Texture & feel: Creamier than the other formulas in this roundup, it builds into a gentle foam, rinses with a soft, cushioned feel, and leaves a soft, hydrated finish. The oat extract gives it a slightly silky quality that is noticeably gentler than many conventional washes. Suitable for all skin types, particularly well-suited for dry and reactive skin.

What it promises: An plant-based body wash formulated without synthetic fragrance, SLES, petrolatum, mineral oil, or artificial colors — designed to gently cleanse while soothing dry and sensitive skin.

Stamp of approval: EWG Verified; dermatologically tested; vegan; free of synthetic fragrance, phthalates, and sulfates; packaged in recyclable HDPE #2 plastic.

Shampoo and Conditioner: Where Fragrance Hides Most

It is worth noting that shampoo and conditioner are among the highest-risk categories for phthalate exposure, precisely because fragranced haircare is so normalized. The following formulations deliver genuine performance of cleansing, shine, and moisture  without the chemical compromise.

  1. Briogeo Be Gentle, Be Kind Aloe + Oat Milk Ultra Soothing Shampoo

Why we love it:  This is Briogeo's most sensitized-skin-forward formula. With no botanical allergens, no hidden scent, it was developed specifically for those with ingredient sensitivities and reactive skin.  The formula treats the scalp as an ecosystem. Aloe barbadensis leaf juice provides antimicrobial and irritation-minimizing benefits; avena sativa (oat) bran extract is rich in omega-6 fatty acids and polysaccharides that hydrate and calm a dry, reactive scalp; camellia sinensis (green tea) extract delivers antioxidant and antimicrobial support; and meadowfoam seed oil provides lightweight lipid nourishment without pore-clogging risk. Panthenol and tocopheryl acetate round out the soothing and conditioning profile.

For anyone dealing with scalp sensitivity, fragrance-triggered reactions, or the dullness that comes from conventional fragranced shampoos coating the hair strand with synthetic compounds, this is a strong option.

Texture & feel: Lightweight and milky, with a gentle, creamy soothing lather. It rinses cleanly without stripping, leaving the scalp unirritated and the hair soft and hydrated without heaviness. Well-suited for all hair types and textures, and particularly ideal for daily use on sensitive or reactive scalps.

What it promises: A hypoallergenic, dermatologist-approved, fragrance- and essential oil-free shampoo that gently cleanses while nourishing and hydrating hair and scalp that’s been formulated for those with ingredient sensitivities, reactive skin, and fragrance intolerance.

Stamp of approval: Dermatologist-approved; clinically tested to be hypoallergenic; Leaping Bunny certified cruelty-free; vegan; 97% naturally derived; free of fragrance, essential oils, sulfates, silicones, parabens, phthalates, DEA, and artificial dyes; formulated without lactose, soy, and gluten.

Full Ingredient list (April 2026): Water/aqua/eau, sodium lauroyl methyl isethionate, cocamidopropyl betaine, glycerin, aloe barbadensis leaf juice, avena sativa (oat) bran extract, camellia sinensis leaf extract, limnanthes alba (meadowfoam) seed oil, panthenol, sodium gluconate, citric acid, leuconostoc/radish root ferment filtrate, panthenyl hydroxypropyl steardimonium chloride, tocopheryl acetate, potassium sorbate, sodium benzoate, caprylhydroxamic acid, benzyl alcohol

  1. Seen Shampoo

Why we love it: SEEN Shampoo carries the same founding insight as its body wash sibling: haircare products leave residue on your skin and that residue shouldn’t cause breakouts or irritation. The formula contains hemisqualane, a plant sugar-derived silicone alternative that provides frizz control, color protection, and heat protection without the buildup or pore-clogging profile of traditional silicones. Bisabolol provides scalp-soothing anti-inflammatory support, and the sulfate-free surfactant system cleanses effectively without stripping the scalp's natural moisture balance. No fragrance, no masking agents, and no dyes.

Texture & feel:The shampoo has a rich lather for a sulfate-free formula and it rinses cleanly without leaving hair feeling coated or weighed down. Our hair feels lighter, fuller, and more voluminous after regular use and works for all hair types; especially for fine, thin, or silicone-sensitive hair.

What it promises: A dermatologist-developed, non-comedogenic, sulfate-free shampoo that cleanses without pore-clogging residue. Safe for sensitive, acne-prone, eczema-prone, and psoriasis-prone skin.  A six-month randomized controlled trial at Harvard's Mass General Hospital found it supported outcomes in patients with female pattern hair loss, supporting  scalp health and reducing hair shedding.

Stamp of approval: National Eczema Association Seal of Acceptance; SkinSAFE "Good for Sensitive Skin" Trusted Choice badge; ELLE Editors' Choice 2024; vegan, cruelty-free, gluten-free; formulated without fragrances, sulfates, silicones, phthalates, parabens, dyes, pore-clogging oils, and formaldehyde-releasing preservatives.

Full Ingredient list (April 2026): Water/Aqua/Eau, Sodium Lauroyl Methyl Isethionate, Cocamidopropylamine Oxide, Glycerin, Acrylates Copolymer, C13-15 Alkane, Glycol Distearate, Aminomethyl Propanol, Guar Hydroxypropyltrimonium Chloride, Polyquaternium-7, Tocopherol, Bisabolol, Trisodium Ethylenediamine Disuccinate, Citric Acid, Sodium Hydroxide, Phenoxyethanol, Ethylhexylglycerin, Sodium Benzoate, Disodium EDTA

  1. Seen Deep Conditioner

Why we love it:  The SEEN Deeper Conditioner is formulated specifically for dry or damaged hair, but with relatively thin hair, this is the superior product in their conditioner line. The deeper conditioner coats the hair with that slip, hydration, and softness of a serious conditioning treatment that we all crave in a product.

The formula centers on C13-15 Alkane, a plant-derived silicone alternative that provides silky smoothness without buildup; shea butter cetyl esters for rich, weightless emollience; bisabolol for scalp-soothing support; and behentrimonium chloride, a conditioning agent that detangles without pore-clogging residue. The entire formula is designed with skin health and non-comedogenic by design.

Texture & feel: A thick, rich, and creamy texture with a satisfying lotion-esq feel that allows for complete detangling even in damaged or textured hair. It absorbs into the strand without feeling heavy, and rinses cleanly without leaving a waxy or coating residue. The finish is smooth, soft, and noticeably frizz-reduced. Leave it on for two to three minutes for daily conditioning, or up to ten minutes for a deeper treatment on wash days.

What it promises: An intensive, fragrance-free deep conditioner that hydrates, detangles, and reduces frizz and breakage. Like their other products, it’s formulated to be non-comedogenic and skin-safe, with hair that is stronger, smoother, and healthier-looking over time.

Stamp of approval: National Eczema Association Seal of Acceptance; vegan, cruelty-free, gluten-free; formulated without fragrances, sulfates, silicones, phthalates, parabens, dyes, pore-clogging oils, and formaldehyde-releasing preservatives; safe for color-treated and keratin-treated hair.

Full Ingredient list (April 2026): Water/aqua/eau, cetearyl alcohol, C13-15 alkane (plant derived), neopentyl glycol diheptanoate, cetyl palmitate, stearamidopropyl dimethylamine, behentrimonium chloride, shea butter cetyl esters, bisabolol, glycerin, polysorbate 80, polyquaternium-37, citric acid, hydrogenated polydecene, disodium EDTA, ethylhexylglycerin, trideceth-6, tocopherol, phenoxyethanol

  1. Briogeo Be Gentle, Be Kind™ Aloe Oat Milk Ultra Soothing Conditioner

Why we love it: The Be Gentle, Be Kind Conditioner replenishes and seals. Created on a richly emollient base of isopropyl palmitate and behentrimonium chloride for exceptional slip and detangling, alongside cetyl esters and grape seed oil, this product nourishes the strand without weighing it down.

Aloe barbadensis leaf juice, oat bran extract, and green tea extract carry over from the shampoo, continuing the soothing and antioxidant work through the conditioning step. Meadowfoam seed oil and jojoba seed oil deliver lightweight lipid replenishment, and panthenol provides moisture retention and strand elasticity. This formula is silicone-free and fragrance-free, with no essential oils, so there is no residue building on the scalp or skin between washes.

Texture & feel:  Since they phased out the pump bottle, it’s much easier to get the smooth and creamy conditioner. With excellent slip, it easily distributes through wet hair from mid-length to ends. It detangles effectively without heaviness and rinses completely, leaving hair soft, shiny, and hydrated without any coating or residue. Suited to all hair types and textures.

Apply it on wash days and leave on for up to two minutes. For particularly dry or sensitized hair, extend to five minutes. The difference is immediate and cumulative.

What it promises:  A hypoallergenic, silicone-free, fragrance- and essential oil-free conditioner that nourishes, hydrates, and soothes hair and scalp. It delivers conditioning performance without any of the common sensitizers that compromise the experience for reactive skin.

Stamp of approval: Leaping Bunny certified cruelty-free; vegan; 97% naturally derived; free of fragrance, essential oils, sulfates, silicones, parabens, phthalates, and DEA.

Full Ingredient list (April 2026): Water/aqua/eau, glycerin, isopropyl palmitate, behentrimonium chloride, cetearyl alcohol, brassica alcohol, cetyl esters, cetrimonium chloride, aloe barbadensis leaf juice, avena sativa (oat) bran extract, camellia sinensis leaf extract, limnanthes alba (meadowfoam) seed oil, tocopheryl acetate, panthenol, vitis vinifera (grape) seed oil, simmondsia chinensis (jojoba) seed oil, brassicyl isoleucinate esylate, behentrimonium methosulfate, leuconostoc/radish root ferment filtrate, guar hydroxypropyltrimonium chloride, arginine, citric acid, potassium sorbate, sodium benzoate, dehydroacetic acid, benzyl alcohol

The Loofah Upgrade: Why Your Scrubber Matters More Than You Think

The humble loofah is an overlooked source of plastic exposure. The ubiquitous mesh body pouf that’s sold in every drugstore and shower caddy is made of polyester netting. With every use, it sheds microplastics directly against warm, open-pored skin. Over the course of a year, that is a significant and entirely unnecessary source of plastic contact.

The swap is simple, affordable, and immediate.

  1. Public Goods Natural Loofah

Why we love it:  The natural loofah is one of the simplest and most meaningful swaps in this entire guide. The Public Goods Natural Loofah is made from the dried fruit of the luffa plant (a cultivated gourd), which means it is entirely plant-derived, biodegrades completely, and introduces zero synthetic materials to your routine or your drain.

Beyond the environmental case, it is super functional: the fibrous structure exfoliates, builds rich lather with minimal product, and is firm enough to support circulation without being abrasive enough to damage skin.

Texture & feel: Firm and slightly rough when dry, it softens significantly with water to a more pliable, skin-friendly texture. The exfoliation is effective and invigorating without being aggressive. This product is best suited for normal to oily skin, and those who prefers a thorough cleanse over a gentle one. Particularly sensitive or thin skin may prefer the Baby Buddy option below.

What it promises: A 100% plant-derived, biodegradable loofah that exfoliates, supports lather, and eliminates microplastic exposure from your shower routine entirely.

Stamp of approval: 100% natural luffa plant material; no synthetic fibers, dyes, or coatings; fully biodegradable and compostable.

Full Ingredient list (April 2026): 100% luffa aegyptiaca (luffa) gourd

  1. Baby Buddy Natural Bath Sponge

Why we love it: The Baby Buddy Natural Bath Sponge is the gentler counterpart to the loofah. For those with sensitized, thin, or reactive skin, it may actually be the better daily choice. Natural sea sponge is one of the softest materials available for skin contact, and the cellular structure holds water and product very well, creating a rich, cushioned lather without any abrasion.

This sponge contains no dyes, synthetic fibers, or coatings and biodegrades completely. It is soft enough for daily use across all skin types, including those managing eczema, psoriasis, or post-procedure sensitivity, and gentle enough for infants and children.

Texture & feel: Exceptionally soft and cushioned — far gentler than a loofah or a conventional mesh pouf. It compresses with pressure and bounces back, distributing product across the skin in a smooth, even layer rather than scrubbing. The exfoliation is minimal but the circulation support is real.

What it promises: A natural, undyed, biodegradable bath sponge that provides gentle daily cleansing and product lather. Safe for sensitive skin, reactive skin, and daily use without abrasion.

Stamp of approval: 100% natural sea sponge; free of synthetic materials, dyes, and coatings; biodegradable.

Full Ingredient list (April 2026):  100% natural sea sponge

  1. Everist Compostable Konjac Body Sponge

Why we love it: Everist’s konjac body sponge is made from the root of the konjac plant. This naturally alkaline fiber gently exfoliates while being completely compostable. Arriving in zero-waste packaging, this brand is committed to concentrated, low-waste, and eco-conscious products.

There are no synthetic materials, no dyes, and no unnecessary treatments. Konjac is naturally pH-balancing and exceptionally gentle, making this a particularly strong option for anyone with sensitized skin or a compromised barrier.

Texture & feel: Firm and slightly dense when dry, transforming into a soft, silky-smooth texture with water. It lathers well with minimal product and glides across the skin without any dragging or abrasion.

What it promises: A 100% compostable, naturally alkaline konjac sponge that provides gentle daily exfoliation and cleansing. Free of synthetic materials, dyes, and additives, and designed to eliminate plastic contact from your shower routine entirely.

Stamp of approval: Natural fibers; undyed; zero-waste packaging; ethically sourced materials consistent with Everist's sustainability commitments across their full product line.

Filter Your Water: The Most Important Upgrade Most People Skip

If you take one action from this guide, make it this one. Everything else, from the fragrance-free products to the natural loofah, address what you put into your shower. A filtered shower head addresses what you shower in.

Unfiltered tap water commonly can contain harsh minerals, heavy metals, lead, and PFAS. Showering in hot, unfiltered water exposes you to inhaling chlorine vapor, absorbing heavy metals through open pores, and potentially exposing yourself to PFAS with every wash. Luckily, there are some great shower head filters that are able to address these water risks.

  1. Jolie Filtered Showerhead

Why we love it: Jolie is one of the sleeker designs, comes in a range of finishes, but we’re primarily concerned with the filter that converts damaging chlorine into harmless chloride. It does not use activated carbon, which underperforms in the conditions of a hot shower. Third-party lab testing shows over 84% chlorine removal across the filter's full lifespan, exceeding NSF-177's 50% benchmark.

For those pressure-seekers, the filter doesn’t reduce water pressure and is a quick, 20-minute install. Clinical studies conducted in 2024 and 2025 found that over 80% of participants experienced reduced hair shedding, with 60% reporting more manageable hair.

Texture & feel: The water feels noticeably softer within the first few showers. You should see that your shampoo lathers more efficiently, with less product, and your skin feels less tight and reactive.

What it promises:  The Jolie filter removes chlorine, heavy metals, and other contaminants from shower water. Clinically, it has shown reduced hair shedding, improved scalp health, and calmer, less reactive skin.

Stamp of approval: Third-party lab tested; exceeds NSF-177 chlorine removal benchmarks; clinically studied for skin and hair outcomes; 60-day money-back guarantee.

Full Ingredient list (April 2026):  Filter media: KDF-55 (copper-zinc alloy), Calcium Sulfite. Showerhead body: chrome-plated ABS plastic (finish varies by colorway).

Purchase it here

  1. Canopy Filtered Showerhead

Why we love it:  Canopy differentiates itself with a triple-action filter system and a user-friendly filter replacement mechanism. Canopy has a three filter media: granular activated carbon (from coconut shells), KDF-55, and calcium sulfite. This approach targets chlorine, hydrogen sulfide, heavy metals, and chloramine. There’s a quick-release filter replacement and so the showerhead never needs to be fully detached from the wall to swap in a new cartridge.

Three stream settings (wide, narrow, and dual) give it a spa-like versatility that no other filtered showerhead in this category offers. Available in matte black, brass, polished chrome, and brushed nickel. Dermatologist-recommended; tested to ANSI/NSF-177 standards for chlorine reduction.

Texture & feel: Strong, consistent water pressure with the option to adjust spray pattern via the face dial. The water feels softer after the first few uses, with most users noticing improved scalp and skin comfort within 30 days.

What it promises: A triple-filtration showerhead tested to NSF-177 standards that reduces chlorine, heavy metals, and other contaminants for softer water.

Stamp of approval: Tested to ANSI/NSF-177 standards

Full Ingredient list (April 2026): Chrome, ABS, TPU

  1. Hydroviv Filtered Showerhead

Why we love it: Hydroviv was chemist-founded and has a lot of credible engineering behind it. The filter uses a three-stage bacteriostatic system built on KDF-55 and calcium sulfite, independently tested to remove over 93% of chlorine.

The filter has a six-month lifespan, making our lives much easier. The brand also publishes its contaminant reduction data publicly, transparency we’re huge proponents of.

Texture & feel: Full water pressure maintained throughout the filter's lifespan. Water feels noticeably softer within the first week with reduced scalp and skin tightness after showering.

What it promises: A science-backed filtered showerhead independently tested to remove over 93% of chlorine. Engineered with a six-month filter lifespan, and built to deliver consistently cleaner water for healthier skin and hair without compromising water pressure.

Stamp of approval: Independently third-party tested; 93% chlorine removal rate; actively pursuing NSF certification; backed by Culligan; 90-day money-back guarantee; five-year hardware warranty; available in three finishes.

Full Ingredient list (April 2026): Filter media: KDF-55 (copper-zinc alloy), calcium sulfite, bacteriostatic media. Showerhead body: ABS plastic (finish varies by colorway). Replace filter every six months.
